One forgotten line item on an order list sounds like a small planning slip. The exact number differs per company, but the components are always the same: a half-day standstill for a four-man crew, a second transport run, a surcharge on the rushed supply, and crane hours that keep counting whether work happens or not.

  • Extra transport run: 350 to 600 euros
  • Half a day of standstill for a four-man crew: 1,200 to 1,800 euros

Why nobody knows their real back-order costs

The reason most builders cannot quote their back-order costs from memory is simple: the expense scatters across three or four cost centers. Crane rental goes to equipment. Emergency supply goes to procurement. Labour standstill gets absorbed into labour variance. Transport gets its own line. Each item is real. Their sum vanishes into the quarterly P&L.

Industry data backs this up. ABN AMRO documented in 2019 that failure costs in Dutch construction run to billions of euros annually, with 4 in 10 builders estimating their own failure costs at 5% of turnover or higher. For a mid-size firm doing 2 million euros in annual revenue, that is 100,000 euros a year lost to preventable failures, of which incomplete order lists are a major driver.

The labour shortage compounds the pain. The EIB expects the construction sector to need roughly 75,000 additional workers by 2029. Every hour a crew stands idle is not just an idle hour. It is a scarce resource blocked from another job.
